“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16:26
As I read this passage this morning, it was that sobering reminder that all that I may accomplish in this life will simply pail in comparison to what I have gained through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In the world I may gain personal and public acclaim, I may attain to worldly wealth, I could have all the awards and accolades men could bestow on me, but if I don't have Christ I have lost the one thing that really matters in the end. The hope of an eternity with the living and reigning Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord. To know that I have pleased Him by my life of service and surrender is the one accomplishment that the world can never afford us. Tje Apostle Paul had a true grasp on this simple truth, (Php 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.) You see, for Paul to get ahead in this life was not about what the world had to offer, but rather what he had received and been promised as the result of willing relationship with the Son of God.
(Php 3:7-8 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.
